Bear-resistant Trash Regulations
Teton County updated its trash container rules on April 10, 2022. Starting July 1, 2022, all garbage and recycling containers and dumpsters in the county must be bear-resistant. The county began enforcing these rules on November 1, 2022.
Why this project matters
When garbage is safely stored in bear-resistant containers, both people and bears stay safer. If bears find food in trash, they can lose their natural fear of humans. This can lead to property damage, dangerous encounters, and more bears visiting neighborhoods for food. By using bear-resistant containers, we reduce conflicts and help keep wildlife wild.
