Why is Teton County proposing to demolish the Hansen Courthouse?<\/h3>\n

The Hansen Courthouse was not originally slated for demolition. However, recent engineering and infrastructure assessments show that essential sewer systems must be replaced and rerouted to support the new Justice Center. These upgrades cannot be completed without either rerouting sanitary lines at great expense or removing the Hansen Courthouse. Demolition now allows the County to complete these upgrades in the most cost-effective and least disruptive way possible.<\/p>\n

What is the Justice Center project and why do we need it?<\/h3>\n

Teton County\u2019s existing courthouse and jail are decades old, undersized, and no longer meet modern standards for security, accessibility, or capacity. The new Justice Center will provide secure, modern courtrooms, expanded jail space, improved ADA accessibility, and updated technology to support virtual hearings and efficient access to justice.<\/p>\n

When will demolition occur?<\/h3>\n

If approved by the Board of County Commissioners on Monday, August 25, demolition will take place in late winter 2025, following permitting and preparation.<\/p>\n

What happens to the organizations currently using the Hansen Courthouse?<\/h3>\n

The County is committed to working directly with each impacted group to identify temporary or alternative space solutions so their services to the public continue without disruption.<\/p>\n

How does this affect the Justice Center project?<\/h3>\n

To maintain continuity of operations during construction, a jury box and jury room will be added to modular office buildings east of the County Administration Building. These modular offices are being prepared for temporary use. At this time, the only decision requested is the Hansen Courthouse demolition.<\/p>\n

Is this going to increase project costs?<\/h3>\n

Utility replacement and rerouting are necessary costs that would have been unavoidable. Demolishing the Hansen Courthouse now allows the County to complete these upgrades in the most cost-efficient and least disruptive way possible.<\/p>\n

Does this delay the Justice Center project?<\/h3>\n

No. Incorporating demolition and infrastructure work now helps keep the Justice Center project on track by preventing unforeseen disruptions later in construction.<\/p>\n
